Hundreds of thousands of Catalans voted in a ballot on independence yesterday despite Spanish government opposition and the knowledge that it would change nothing. Voters queued outside polling stations after weeks of legal battles between Madrid and authorities in the northeastern region. Spain's centre-right government challenged the vote in the courts, forcing the Catalan government to water it down from a non-binding referendum to a symbolic "consultation".
