Spain's government is going to ask the country's Constitutional Court
for a verdict on whether a declaration, which was recently adopted by
the parliament of Catalonia, and which announces Catalonia "a
sovereign political and juridical subject", was lawful.
The declaration also suggests that a referendum concerning the status
of Catalonia should be held in this region. Spain's Deputy Prime
Minister Soraya Saenz de Santamaria believes that this decision of the
Catalonian parliament runs counter to Spain's constitution, and, if
implemented, "would be likely to stir a process that would lead to
infringement of people's rights".
The parliament of Spain's northeastern region of Catalonia had passed
a declaration stating the region is a sovereign entity. The mostly
symbolic move will potentially pave the way for a future referendum on
independence from Spain. Madrid had promised to block any move towards
Catalonian independence.
