Estelada flags, that symbolize Catalonia's independence, in Barcelona

Emilio Morenatti

Hundreds of thousands of Catalan separatists prepared to take to the streets of Barcelona today as they looked to a "yes" vote in the Scottish referendum to boost their campaign to split from Spain. A week before Scots go to the polls, saltire flags were carried by demonstrators who want a similar vote on independence in the wealthy northeastern Spanish region. The Catalan regional government has called a non-binding vote for November 9, but Mariano Rajoy, the Spanish prime minister, has vowed to block the vote which he claims is illegal because it breaches the Spanish constitution.
